The Distance

They deftly maneuver, picking their seats
Moving around, they're looking to cheat
Reluctantly slouched at the lecture hall desk
Brain cells pumping and yearning for rest

The clock nears seven, exams passed out
Physics 111, his grade's in doubt
Reckless and wild, they pour through the test
Bubbling in answers, they're doing their best

As they speed through the finish, the pencils go down
The students get up and they get out of town
The lecture hall's empty except for one man
Still deriving and striving as best as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago the students left in disgust
But he's deriving and striving, calculating in turns
And thinking of grades for which he still burns

He's finding the distance
He's finding the speed
He's all alone in his time of need
Because he's thinking and panting and filled with remorse
If he'd gone to class maybe he'd pass this course
He's finding the distance

No answers, no clues, no help, no time
He's haunted by variables he cannot define
Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him, with monster truck force

In his mind he's still thinking he's making the grade
He's hoping in time that his memory won't fade
Because he's thinking and panting and filled with remorse
If he'd gone to class maybe he'd pass this course
